Abstract

Purpose: This study was aimed to develop a local guideline to prevent errors in surgical counts.

Methods: Thirty seven perioperative nurses of C University Hospital in G city were recruited. To derive preliminary items of the guideline, literature reviews and interviews with nurses were conducted. The preliminary items were refined and Content Validity Index (CVI) for each item was determined by clinical experts. After assessing application rates (%) of the items with experienced nurses, the final guideline was established.

Results: The 161 preliminary items were drawn up and categorized by time and types of counts. After refinement of imprecise or controversial items, the number of preliminary guideline items came to 142. The mean CVI of the refined guideline was .98 for adequacy, .95 for applicability, and .98 for effectiveness. Based on the results of content validity test, 1 item was corrected and 3 items were deleted. The average application rate of the revised guideline was relatively high as 84.9%. The final guideline was developed with 139 items.

Conclusion: This guideline can help perioperative nurses to more accurately perform surgical counts. Further research is needed to test this guideline.
